What WiseGut does

WiseGut is a gut health app for iPhone, for people working out which foods set off their symptoms.

  • Photograph a meal or an ingredients label and it rates the dish for FODMAPs, ingredient by ingredient.
  • A daily check-in takes about 30 seconds. One answer counts as a logged day.
  • Insights show which foods line up with your rough days, and how many logged days each one is based on.
  • WiseGut, the in-app companion, talks through your own logs with you.
  • Meal ideas suggest recipes that rate low FODMAP.

It is a scanner and a log. It does not diagnose or treat anything, and it is not a medical device. Talk to a healthcare professional before you change your diet or your treatment.

Scans, and what is free

  • Signed in without a subscription: 3 scans a day, which reset the next day.
  • Using the app as a guest, without an account: 3 scans in total on that device.
  • With a subscription: scan as much as you like.

Scanning is the only thing a subscription unlocks. The check-in, your journal, insights, WiseGut and the meal ideas are open either way.

Cancelling your subscription

Subscriptions are billed by Apple, so they are cancelled through Apple and not inside WiseGut:

  • Open Settings on your iPhone.
  • Tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions.
  • Tap WiseGut, then Cancel Subscription.

In the app, Settings > Manage payments opens that same Apple subscriptions page for you.

Your trial turns into a paid subscription when it ends, unless you cancel before then. It renews on its own until you cancel. Cancel any time in Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions. If you cancel, you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for. Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us.

Restoring a purchase

If you have paid before and the app is not recognising it, open the subscription screen and tap Restore Purchase. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it with, since Apple ties the purchase to that account rather than to your WiseGut login.

Deleting your account, and what that removes

You can delete your account yourself, in the app: Settings > Delete account. You will be asked to confirm. It cannot be undone.

It takes everything with it:

  • Your profile and your login.
  • Every check-in and every scan.
  • The trigger findings built from them, and your streak.
  • Your chats with WiseGut and the notes it kept.
  • Everything WiseGut had stored on that phone.

Not anonymised, not archived. The erase runs on our servers, started by the deletion itself, so it does not need your phone to stay online to finish. It cannot half-happen.

Two things stay, and neither one is about you. Population counters, such as how many people report bloating in a given week: they are counted as the data arrives rather than worked out later from stored records, so they carry no user ID and no text, and nothing is published until at least 25 people are behind it. And what the app has learned about foods, which is stored by the name of the food. A fact about garlic is not a fact about a person.

Cancel your subscription before you delete your account. Deleting the account does not cancel it, because Apple manages the billing separately, and it will keep renewing.

Turning notifications off

In the app, Settings > Notifications opens the iOS settings page for WiseGut, where you can switch them off. You can also do it from Settings > Notifications > WiseGut on your phone.

For what it is worth, the app sends at most four a day, nothing between 22:30 and 07:30, and it never asks how bad your symptoms are. If you ignore them for about a week it pauses them on its own.

Common questions

  • How do I unlock the WiseGut chat? Fill in your diary on 5 days, or scan at least one thing on 5 days. They do not have to be consecutive. Once it opens it stays open, and it is not tied to a subscription. Everyone gets 15 replies a day.
  • What do Low, Moderate and High mean? They are the FODMAP band for the dish at the portion you gave it. Anything the app could not check stays grey with a question mark rather than being treated as safe. Tap Why this rating? on any result for the reasoning.
  • A scan got an ingredient wrong. Tap the ingredient row to correct it, change the portion, or say what was in a sauce. The rating updates and is labelled as changed after your edits.
  • My data is not syncing. Check your connection, then force quit the app and reopen it. Anything logged offline is queued and sent when you are back online. If it persists, email us.
  • I used the app as a guest and lost my data. A guest session lives only on that phone. Creating an account keeps your data if you reinstall or change phone.
  • Which devices? iPhone, on iOS 16 or later. There is no iPad layout, and there is no Android version.
  • What does it cost? 3 days free, then $49.99 a year or $12.99 a month. The App Store shows you the current price in your own currency, and the exact trial length, before you confirm anything.
